In Gwanwyn* 2022 we launched Casgleb, a research and development project in collaboration with artistiaid* and young people, hosted by Peak Cymru and Transport for Wales at Platfform 2, Abergavenny Train Station.
Casgleb is an invented Welsh word for ‘collective’. It’s a new word imagined by Esyllt Lewis and Dylan Huw, seeking to contribute to a new vocabulary for the arts in Wales, as 'casgliad' - the Welsh word most often used when translating ‘collective’ - translates more directly to a collection or gathering. During 2022, young people and artists have gathered at Platfform 2, around different ways of listening, sharing, voicing and learning, to think differently about futures in Cymru*. Across seasons of activity we’ve been imagining sustainable futures for our communities and our languages, so it feels apt that we find new words to better communicate the futures we’re modelling together.
Yn ystod Gwanwyn 2022 lansiwyd Casgleb, project ymchwil a datblygu mewn cydweithrediad ag artistiaid a phobl ifanc, wedi’i gynnal gan Peak Cymru a Thrafnidiaeth Cymru ar Blatfform 2, Gorsaf Drenau’r Fenni.
Gair gwneud yw Casgleb, wedi ei greu gan Esyllt Angharad Lewis a Dylan Huw, er mwyn cyfrannu at eirfa newydd ar gyfer y celfyddydau yng Nghymru, gan nad oedd ‘casgliad’ – y gair Cymraeg sydd fel arfer yn cael ei ddefnyddio wrth ddisgrifio ‘collective’ – cweit yn tycio. Yn ystod 2022, bu artistiaid a phobl ifanc yn ymgasglu ar Blatfform 2 i drafod ffyrdd amgen o wrando, rhannu, lleisio a dysgu er mwyn ystyried dyfodolau Cymru. Yn ystod ein tymhorau o weithgarwch buom yn dychmygu dyfodolau cynaliadwy i’n cymunedau a’n hieithoedd, felly mae’n teimlo’n bwysig ein bod yn darganfod geiriau newydd i gyfathrebu ynghylch y weledigaeth yr ydym yn ymrafael i’w chreu ar y cyd.
In the Spring, Pegwn brought together a group of artists and thinkers to share work and seed new ideas around language futures in Wales. The group of artists, activists, poets, theatre-makers, musicians and ecologists explored the tension and potential of living and creating in multilingual places, asking what new kinds of thinking and collaborating might emerge between languages. This became a space to embrace contradiction, mistranslation and half-formed ideas. Pegwn has been led by Dylan Huw, and the Spring forums were joined by Llinos Anwyl, Jenny Cashmore, Bob Evans, fin Jordão, Esyllt Angharad Lewis, Marva Jackson Lord, Nia Morais, Rowan O’Neill and Gwenllian Spink. To share the research and thinking which emerged in these gatherings, Dylan Huw created a newspaper which acts as a kind of scrapbook, holding the voices of the group. Read this here.
In early Summer, Platfform Haf brought together young people to make, share, listen and imagine together with artists, writers, geologists and activists. Gathering around ways of thinking about climate change, hope, power and collective making, the group explored kinship in nature, personal climate languages, deep time, resources of hope and how we carry questions for the future. The programme, led by Rachel Dunlop, was joined by Robin Eaton, Felix Stevenson-Davies, Chloe Winder, Penelope Gammon, Saskia McKay, Izzy McLeod, Aisling Edwards and Ffion Williams. The practitioners who contributed to the programme were: Jess Tanner, Durre Shahwar, Cerys Scorey, Angela YT Chan, Heledd C Evans, Gwenllian Spink, Sion Marshall Waters, Rory Pilgrim, Taylor Edmonds, Alan Bowring.
Gathering at the station in late Summer, LUMIN - a collective run by artists Sadia Pineda Hameed and Beau W Beakhouse - have been exploring ideas of autonomy, friendship and collaboration. In general, autonomy means to be self-governed, and in this project, LUMIN are approaching autonomy as a means of finding a way beyond oppressive systems past and present. Focussing on collective research and process, and working from Abergavenny Station in dialogue with an international group of collaborators, LUMIN have been looking at the potential of print, radio and collectivity for LUMIN’s work. Collaborators include Lauren Craig, Mort Drew, Diego Gutierrez Valladares, Owen Griffiths, Cecelia Graham and Marva Jackson Lord.
This Autumn, a small group of artists and young people from these interwoven collaborations will return to Platfform 2 to deepen and expand on the beginnings grown earlier in the year. We’ll also be joined by new and past collaborators, thinking about the work this programme builds on and the future conversations still to emerge. This activity will focus on a week-long programme - running Saturday 22 October to Saturday 29 October - convened with artist Owen Griffiths.

Yn y Gwanwyn, daeth Pegwn â grwp o artistiaid a meddylwyr at ei gilydd er mwyn rhannu gwaith a hau syniadau newydd am ddyfodolau ieithyddol Cymru. Bu’r grŵp o artistiaid, ymgyrchwyr, beirdd, gwneuthurwyr theatr, cerddorion ac ecolegwyr yn archwilio’r tensiwn a’r potensial o fyw a gweithio o fewn gofodau amlieithog, gan holi pa fath o ffyrdd o feddwl a chydweithio allai flaguro rhwng ieithoedd. Daeth hwn yn ofod i gofleidio gwrth-ddweud, camgyfieithu a syniadau anghyfieithus. Dylan Huw sy’n arwain Pegwn, ac yn ystod fforymau’r Gwanwyn cafodd gwmni Llinos Anwyl, Jenny Cashmore, Bob Evans, fin Jordão, Esyllt Angharad Lewis, Marva Jackson Lord, Nia Morais, Rowan O’Neill a Gwenllian Spink. Er mwyn rhannu’r ymchwil a’r syniadau ddaeth i’r wyneb yn ystod y sgyrsiau hyn, lluniodd Dylan Huw bapur newydd sy’n gweithredu fel math o lyfr lloffion, yn dal lleisiau’r grŵp. Darllenwch hwn fan hyn.
Ar ddechrau’r haf, daeth Platfform Haf â chriw o bobl ifanc at ei gilydd i greu, rhannu, gwrando a dychmygu gydag artistiaid, sgwennwyr, daearegwyr ac ymgyrchwyr. Gan ystyried ffyrdd o feddwl am newid hinsawdd, gobaith, pŵer a chreu ar y cyd, aeth y grŵp ati i archwilio perthnasau â natur, ein geirfaoedd personol wrth ymwneud â’r hinsawdd, amser dwfn, adnoddau gobaith a sut i barhau i holi cwestiynau at y dyfodol. Rachel Dunlop oedd yn cydlynu’r rhaglen, yng nghwmni Robin Eaton, Felix Stevenson-Davies, Chloe Winder, Penelope Gammon, Saskia McKay, Izzy McLeod, Aisling Edwards a Ffion Williams. Yr ymarferwyr a gyfrannodd at y rhaglen oedd: Jess Tanner, Durre Shahwar, Cerys Scorey, Angela YT Chan, Heledd C Evans, Gwenllian Spink, Sion Marshall Waters, Rory Pilgrim, Taylor Edmonds, Alan Bowring.
Daeth LUMIN i’r orsaf ar ddiwedd yr haf – casgleb fechan wedi’i rhedeg gan Sadia Pineda Hameed a Beau W Beakhouse. Maen nhw wedi bod yn archwilio syniadau’n ymwneud ag ymreolaeth, cyfeillgarwch a chydweithio. Yn gyffredinol, ystyr ymreolaeth yw hunan-lywodraethu, ac yn y project hwn, mae LUMIN yn dod at ymreolaeth fel modd o ddarganfod ffyrdd o oddiweddyd systemau gormesol y gorffennol a’r presennol. Gan ganolbwyntio ar ymchwil a phrosesau casglebol, a chan weithio yng Ngorsaf y Fenni mewn cydweithrediad â grŵp rhyngwladol o gydweithwyr, mae LUMIN wedi bod yn ystyried potensial gwaith print, radio a gweithio ar y cyd i waith LUMIN. Maen nhw wedi gweithio gyda Lauren Craig, Mort Drew, Diego Gutierrez Valladares ac Owen Griffiths, yn ogystal â Cecelia Graham, Marva Jackson Lord ac eraill.
Yr Hydref hwn, bydd grŵp bychan o artistiaid a phobl ifanc o’r cyweithiau rhyngblethol hyn yn dychwelyd i’r Platfform i ddyfnhau a thyfu’r hadau a blannwyd yn gynharach eleni. Byddwn hefyd yn cael cwmni artistiaid sydd wedi cydweithio gyda ni yn y gorffennol, yn ogystal â rhai newydd, gan ystyried y gwaith mae’r rhaglen hon yn ddatblygiad ohono a’r sgyrsiau sydd i ddod. Bydd y gweithgarwch ar ffurf rhaglen wythnos o hyd rhwng Dydd Sadwrn 22 Hydref a Dydd Sadwrn 29 Hydref – wedi’i arwain gan yr artist Owen Griffiths.
Caiff Casgleb ei gynnal gan Peak mewn partneriaeth â Thrafnidiaeth Cymru, gyda chefnogaeth grant Cysylltu a Ffynnu Cyngor Celfyddydau Cymru.
